Take advantage of your stay in Amsterdam to discover the traditional villages of Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken thanks to this excursion!
You will leave Amsterdam by comfortable bus (wifi on board) to cross the picturesque villages located to the north of Amsterdam. You will contemplate the landscapes of this coastal region dotted with colorful windmills.
You will first discover the historic village of Zaanse Schans, famous for its numerous windmills and traditional wooden houses. More than ten mills line the banks of the Zaan River and you can walk freely in this open-air museum to observe and photograph them (entrance to the mills at an additional cost, to be paid on site).
You will then reach Volendam, a typical Dutch fishing village. You will also visit a cheese factory which perpetuates the Dutch tradition - tasting included. Don't miss a stroll on the "De Dijk" promenade and its charming little port. If you are there at lunch time, it is recommended to enjoy a fresh fish in one of its restaurants.
Your third and final destination will be the village of Marken, a former island located in Lake Markermeer, and now a peninsula with its lighthouse “Het Paard van Marken”. The village is famous for its clog factories and its wooden houses built on stilts. Since Marken is regularly flooded, the inhabitants have in fact built their houses on mounds of earth, called “terpen”.
You will be amazed by the charm of these picturesque villages which have preserved their coastal landscapes. Thanks to your guide and the multilingual audio guide provided, you will delve into the history of this region and discover traditional Dutch culture.
