Spend a day in remembrance by visiting the Flanders Battlefields, leaving from Brussels
Take the bus from Brussels to get to the Ypres region
Start your day by discovering Vladslo, the German cemetery, and the famous “Grieving Parents” statue.
Then, go to the Diksmuide village where you can visit the ancient “Trench of Death”. You can also see the ‘Paxpoort’, Gate of Peace as well as the Yser Tower.
After, head to Passchendaele and pass by the town of Houthulst and the St. Julien Memorial monument.
Upon arriving at the Tyne Cot cemetery, you can see the 35,000 tombs of the soldiers of the British Empire who fell during the violent battle. You will also see the old military hospital from the Essex Farm before going to The Flanders Museum, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the end of your day, head back to Ypres and use your free time to have a meal (not included) before going to the ‘Last Post’ ceremony at the Menin Gate. There, you will hear the firemen’s bugles sound off the anthem in homage to the fallen of the Commonwealth, who sacrificed themselves far from their homes, a tradition carried out every day since 1927.
Early evening, you will return to Brussels.
