From your accommodation in central Bucharest, you'll cross the Bulgarian border into the Rusenski Lom region of northern Bulgaria. This region is famous for its troglodyte monasteries. Your first stop is the Ivanovo cave churches (entrance ticket not included), built in the 12th century.These troglodyte churches and monasteries are famous for their 14th-century murals, painted by students at the Tarnovo School of Painting.
Your tour will continue to the small village of Arbanasi, a village steeped in history and home to numerous historic monuments, including churches from the 17th and 18th centuries. It was in the eighteenth century that wealthy merchants built their houses in Arbanasi, as it was a central point for trading with Transylvania, Russia and Poland. Today, one of the houses is still intact, the Konstantsaliev House, which you will visit (entrance ticket not included).
Finally, you'll head for Veliko Tarnovo, nicknamed "City of the Tsars" because it was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The old town is concentrated on three hills: Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, overlooking the Yantra River. You'll visit the medieval fortress of Tsarevets (entrance ticket not included) and learn about the history of Veliko Tarnovo.
