About 20 kilometers from Barcelona, visit Gaudi's Crypt in the industrial district of Colonie Güell!
Within the municipality of Santa Coloma de Cervelló lies one of the most avant-garde industrial districts of the 19th century: Colonie (or Colonia) Güell. Here you'll discover the Gaudi-designed Crypt, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2005.
The district dates back to 1890, when Eusebi Güell, entrepreneur and patron of the arts, moved his textile mill from Barcelona to Santa Coloma de Cervelló. Today, it is one of Catalonia's most important industrial complexes, and retains its avant-garde character thanks to its urban design.
Designed by Gaudi, the crypt was originally a church project, abandoned along the way for lack of funds. Like Gaudi's other works, you'll see that the crypt is composed of architectural innovations such as catenary arches, exterior walls and vaults with hyperbolic paraboloid shapes.
By visiting with an audioguide you'll learn more about these buildings. Come and discover the impressive and atypical architecture of Gaudi's Crype!
