Enjoy a private cruise on Lake Skadar and learn about the history of Grmožur Fortress with a guide!
You will travel to Virpazar, a small village north of Lake Skadar (also called Lake Shkodra). In the heart of the Skadar national park, which acts as the border between Montenegro and Albania, Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans. You will meet your local guide at the meeting point and set off on a private one-hour cruise, discovering the wildlife. You will sail towards Godinje Island to discover the ruins of Grmožur Fortress. This 19th century fortress is known as "the Montenegrin Alcatraz" because it was used as a prison during the time of King Nikola, and it was impossible to escape from it. In the early 20th century, political prisoners served their sentences in Grmožur. Also known as "Snake Island" by locals, it is now a habitat for many species of birds. You will be taken on a tour of the fortress while your guide tells you the history of the fortress, however you will not be able to go onto the island as this is not allowed. You will be delivered to Virpazar after a private one-hour cruise on Lake Skadar.
